There’s even a built-in third-party app, CoinOpsX, that comes pre-installed and greatly simplifies the conversion process. This sort of thing is also firmly in legally gray territory. Most classic arcade and consoles games aren’t readily available anywhere in 2020. But you don’t have to look hard to find the ROM files you’d need to get them working on a Legends Ultimate. There’s a sizable community of people who are committed to preservation on the web, and part of that means squirreling ROM libraries away in easily accessible places. What will likely be more appealing to most, though, is the ability to load and play games directly from an attached USB stick. It takes a little doing both to find the files you need and then make them play nice with the Legends Ultimate.

Turn-based games have an ideal home on mobile devices because they allow you to pause the action just as your elevator arrives, without having to worry about a grisly death. Spaceland channels classic turn-based franchises like X-Com as players do battle with deadly aliens. The graphics are bright and clean, and it lacks the overwhelming complexity of its strategy brethren, making it a great introduction to the genre. The initial launch line-up includes over 50 games, but we’ve gone ahead and narrowed them down to 14 titles you’d do well to check out first. That being said, we did want to include some variety with games that offer a unique tactile experience beyond just pushing buttons and moving a joystick. New to the list, Brio Pinball has a wooden base and no electronic components, so it’s a good choice for those looking for something to keep them entertained on an off-the-grid getaway.

Vatos Whac-A-Mole and Merchant Ambassador Basketball both re-create arcade staples while helping youngsters develop motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Basic Fun Tetris (appx. $25) captures the challenge of one of the world’s most recognizable video games. Adjust the pieces as they fall in order to clear the screen before the bricks pile up too high. The controls are intuitive, so you should be mastering your technique in no time. With over 300 games and several control options, this is the perfect way to relive the glory days of the arcade. We recommend playing this game with a supported game controller, rather than a touch screen, for a much better experience. The fact remains, though, that being able to essentially load a customized library of 1,000-plus gaming classics onto a USB stick and run them through an arcade machine is a big selling point here.

I signed up for Apple Arcade on the day I purchased my iPhone 11 Pro, and spent time with a handful of games including "What the Golf?" and "EarthNight." I enjoyed both games immensely — at first. For most of last year, I was chuffed about the launch of Apple Arcade, an honest-to-goodness gaming service that is, for all intents and purposes, the Netflix for video games. You pay a monthly fee for access to an entire library of games that you can pick up and put down at will, with no ads or microtransactions to worry about, and the ability to enjoy the same content on multiple devices. Apple Arcade garnered praise almost immediately — even before it came out — for providing the ability to play any games offline, on any Apple device, and without the need for ads or microtransactions. If you’re into mobile games, you’ve almost certainly played one of Zach Gage’s releases. SpellTower, Sage Solitaire, and Really Bad Chess all made a splash.

However, with free-to-play and predatory junk outnumbering the good stuff, a bit of the oft-mocked Apple walled garden was desperately needed – which leads us ACE Stream to the current curated paradise of Arcade. But I like buying into services that actually complement my behaviors — PlayStation Plus makes owning a PlayStation 4 better, Netflix and Amazon Video make owning a streaming device better, et cetera. But Apple Arcade, to me, wasn’t worth paying $5 a month for something I wasn’t going to use. Apple Arcade lets you play games across any Apple device, picking up where you left off. After my initial playtime, I felt no desire to boot up those games again.
